In Larnaca, the rst stop will be at the magni cent Ayios Lazaros Church, built by Byzantine Emperor Leo IV during the 9th century. Here lies the tomb of St. Lazarus who was believed to have been raised from the dead by Christ himself and who subsequently came to Cyprus where he was made bishop of Kition by St. Barnabas and St. Mark. Upon arrival in the city of Ni- cosia is the Archbishop Palace, built in the 1950’s and a reminder of the invasion of 1974 when it was almost destroyed.
Within the palace courtyard is the cathe- dral of St. John which dates back to 1665, housing ex- quisite 18th century murals depicting the story of Cy- prus’ religious history. Afterwards, a spot of shopping is in order at Laiki Getonia where there are traditional houses set upon narrow, winding streets dotted with numerous craft shops also. Lastly, there will be a visit to Leventis Municipal Museum showcasing signi cant collections that re ect the City’s rich cultural heritage.
